Hornby woman’s lucky escape So it was time to buy Lotto tickets By Andrew King A WOMAN who walked away from serious car crash without an injury bought $100 of Lotto and Instant Kiwi scratch tickets to ride her good luck. Graphic designer Nicole Martin’s Toyota Hilux was badly damaged when it rolled five times and ended up on a railway line at the intersection of Barters and Waterloo Rds, Nicole Templeton, about Martin 4pm on Thursday. The 25-yearold from Hornby said she was broadsided by another vehicle driven by a young man. She claims the vehicle went through a stop sign. Miss Martin said she only saw the car briefly before the collision. “There is a big hedge [on the corner] so I saw it at the last second and there was nothing I could do about it,” she said. She believes staying calm saved her. “I think that’s what saved me,” she said.

Miss Martin turned the ignition off and climbed out of the window. “I yelled at the young fella and then the emergency services turned up.” She then looked at her vehicle and realised she how fortunate she was. “I am lucky to be here,” she said.
Emergency services staff could not believe she was the driver of the rolled vehicle. The Instant Kiwi tickets have not been winners, and the Lotto tickets from Saturday night’s draw?: Not lucky either. She would have bought a Ford Ranger (right). “It has a five-star safety rating,” she laughed.

SOME PEOPLE are very lucky in life – we have one on our front page today. Hornby’s Nicole Martin could have had a very different outcome when she was struck broadside in Templeton last week. She rolled a few times and her vehicle was a wreck. But she walked away with hardly a scratch. Emergency services were staggered she didn’t even need to go to hospital to be checked over. So when good fortune strikes, it often pays to roll the dice again. Nicole bought herself Lotto and scratchies but alas they haven’t come up trumps. But she’s one lucky girl, nevertheless! Great story on page 3 today. St Thomas rugby forward Caius Faatili scored a last minute try to seal his team’s crucial win. But it could have been a disaster. –Barry Clarke

By Andrew King ST THOMAS’ lock Caius Faatili went from zero to hero when he scored the match-winning try against Rangiora High just minutes after missing a penalty on Saturday. With about three minutes to go and trailing 20-21, St Thomas’ were awarded a penalty almost in front in the UC Championship plate semi-final. Co-coach Paul Burton told Western News yesterday you could have “almost thrown it over”, but Faatili, who came off the bench in the 50th minute, missed. St Thomas’ held on to the ball after the restart, and in the final play of the game, Faatili found himself one-on-one just metres out, crossing the line by the uprights to take the match – and make up for his earlier missed attempt. So the big question: Did he convert his own try? No, he passed that honour to prop Malyche Tafili who duly obliged to give the side their 27-21 win. Burton said Faatili, who reminds him of Australia rugby legend John Eales, did well to bounce back after the missed penalty. St Thomas will host Waimea Combined in the final at 11am, Saturday. Burton said a win there would cap off one of their most successful campaigns to date. “We beat St Bede’s for the first time in 29 years and no team has given us a thrashing this year. I think our biggest defeat has been by about 11 points, including when we faced the top four teams,” he said.

News Young artist gets big opportunity Fashion By Julia Evans IMAGINE SEEING your sculpture on display in the city alongside the likes of Antony Gormley and Ronnie van Hout. That’s about to become a reality for 16-year-old Villa Maria student Ruby Williams. Ruby won the senior section of the Re:ACTIVATE project organised by SCAPE Public Art and will soon see her sketches come to life as a sculpture in Hagley Park. Although the honour doesn’t come with the same $800,000 pay check that Gormley received. Ruby’s design relates to the concept of memory and will involve recreating a tree’s lost limb out of metal mesh. The sculpture will be on display in September for six weeks. The design was of a live tree with its branch previously sawn off due to damage or disease, Ruby said. “Replacing that branch with a wire mesh copy resembling the memory of the limb that used to be there. The city is similar in some regards – it fell during the earthquake and was completely changed, parts of it were gone but not forgotten.”

Engineers from Lewis and Bradford have been tasked with taking Ruby’s idea and making it a reality. She met with the engineers, SCAPE art staff and Botanic Gardens staff to choose the perfect tree.

Gary Knight – As the official playing ground of Hornby Rugby Football Club, Hornby Cricket Club and featuring various playing fields, the velodrome oval synonymous with the 1974 Commonwealth Games cycling events and close proximity to five schools bears testimony to the ideal siting and much used characteristics of Denton Park. Within this context therefore the siting of the south west pool complex would complement this sporting focused venue. In sheer contrast however, the siting of the Hornby library and service centre here lacks integrity and would totally demean the very nature of Denton Park. Both the service centre and library attracting large attendance would be better suited ideally within or in conjunction to The Hub
Dick Osborne – Definitely not Denton Park!! The city council can spend a bit more money on Hornby (it is needed) and develop Kyle Park properly as there is already too much congestion around The Hub at Hornby!

Hornby in either a built or leased venue within the business precinct. Alternatively given the myriad of real estate opportunities in the southwest, a purpose built venue is a viable option and solution for siting of the library and service centre.

The preferred venue, Kyle Park, would allow more car parking and at the same time provide safer walking to and from the sports fields. The longer the asbestos is left in the grounds, the more expensive it will be to remove – as it will have to be one day. Does asbestos ‘leech’ unwanted chemicals into the ground? The only advantage of retaining Denton Park would be to The Hub – more shoppers and maybe some more parking. The parking would be taken up by the

Car goes off road at tricky intersection ACHIEVERS

Two people were lucky to escape injury when they went off the road and landed in a small swamp at the intersection of Trices and Ellesmere Rds, near Halswell, on Monday. Firefighters and ambulance staff were initially unable to find the crashed vehicle, but a call to the occupants revealed its location. Both were out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived at about 7.30pm.

Starting on the first day of school, children were treated to a Myth Buster assembly complete with lab coats, crazy hair and dry ice. That has been followed up with daily experiments throughout the school with a variety of different focuses – such as making slime, sherbet and fire snakes.

Call for nominations for road trauma awards Fashion ORGANISATIONS and people who deal with road accidents will be recognised for their work. The Canterbury Road Trauma Awards will be held at the Road Accident Remembrance Day at North Hagley Park on Saturday, November 4. Nominations for the awards are now being called for. Road Traffic Accident Trauma Charitable Trust spokeswoman, Sarah Dean, said the effects of road trauma extends far beyond the victims involved in the initial incident. The awards are seen as recognition and acknowledgement of this, she said. There are three award categories, Canterbury road trauma award for public service, trauma prevention and community service. The public service award will be for outstanding individuals, teams or organisations, who will receive recognition for their service and contribution to the duty of care for those affected by road trauma. This award is open to first responders, industry

The award for trauma prevention aims to recognise winners for their contribution to road safety, public education, road trauma prevention initiatives and duty of care in Canterbury. Those members of the community who have provided care

Smoke alarms need to stay on the ceilings By Mark Thomas - Specialist fire investigator WE HAD a fatal fire in Christchurch last week. So it was not the best week in our office. Part of what we do is to constantly strive to prevent such things happening by ensuring people have smoke alarms and escape plans. In the tragic loss in Cashel St (right) there were some smoke alarms. They were correctly installed but we don’t know if they had been maintained. The last one, still sounding when firefighters entered, was in the bedroom where the occupant was found. But this one wasn’t on the ceiling where the backing plate remained. It had been brought down too low to give adequate warning. Had the alarm just been left on the ceiling, at the highest point in the room, there’s a chance the victim would have had time to escape. Such a little thing! As always there were kitchen

fires last week. At two of the four events, people ended up needing ambulance attention for smoke inhalation. Nearly always this is because they have left the kitchen and the cooking unattended and returned to fire and smoke. Then they desperately try to fix a situation that is beyond them. Stay in the kitchen! Most cooking fires will be controllable but only if you’re there when they start. There was a slightly odd fire cause in Woolston on August 12 where a low sun through the window reflected off a magnifying mirror causing curtains to start smoking. This happens occasionally. However, it’s one of those things that most of us would never consider.
Speed gets checkout operators to nationals

They made short work of Burnside-Rangi 36-7, running in six tries at the Ilam Fields to record their second consecutive undefeated season in the UC Cup. Their last loss was against Motueka Girls’ High in the Crusader regional play-off last year. Some excellent finishing saw them get past Burnside High, known as ‘the beasts’, 5-3 in last week’s semi-final at English Park. Now they will play the team, known as ‘the thistles’, on August 30 at English Park. St Thomas’ coach Richard Washington said they were pleased with the result but know there are areas to work on before the final. “We have a few areas we will tidy up in the next few weeks and aren’t happy how we conceded some goals but rapt with the reply and overall grit and determination of the boys as Burnside is a very capable team. And to be fair, some of their goals were top shelf,” he said. Burnside coach David Williams said he was proud of his team and the way they played in the semi. “We knew the winner would be the team who defended the best due to both teams having a very good attack and, unfortunately, we missed out,” he said.

Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community. What an extraordinary and diverse community we have at Hornby High School. Regardless of race, gender preference, religion, culture, or academic and sporting ability, there is a place for everyone. We are proud of the work we do to include all learners regardless of background or ability, and to create personalised learning pathways. There will always be some degree of discomfort with such diversity for some members of any community, and we work hard to promote a positive environment in which we support individual students to be the best they can be. At this year’s School Trustees Association conference in July it was reassuring to hear Human Rights Commissioner Mr David Rutherford talking about school bullying, citing the KiVa programme as an example of a programme that is proven to reduce bullying behaviour. This is one of the four initiatives we use to build and maintain strong positive relationships in our kura. Further work continues to ensure we have a kura that welcomes and accepts everyone. At a meeting last term, the Board of Trustees decided to remove gender labels from our uniform items to meet the gender identity needs of all students. The promotion of human rights for the LGBT community is a common thread when our students identify positive community action projects with which they would like to be involved, reflecting their underlying sense of fairness and equity. Our students have great heart. The Manaiakalani initiative continues to accelerate achievement for our tamariki. Latest research at Hornby High School and across our cluster shows students are making one and a half to two years gain in their learning in the course of one year – exceptional stuff. The Manaiakalani programme uses a common pedagogy across the whole cluster, called “Learn Create Share”, and uses the benefits of digital devices to support these three cornerstones to effective education. Some of the work coming from our students is of extraordinary depth and quality. This is why we ask all whanau to invest in a Chromebook for every child. Remember that we are often able to help if this proves to be too difficult. Our Hornby schools cluster is forming a charitable trust to support the Manaiakalani programme and the provision of devices for our students. These are exciting times. Term 2 ended on an exciting note with market day held at school. Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 had worked throughout the term on designing products to market and sell. They learnt many skills related to running a business and made their products to sell on their stalls. On market day there was a huge support from parents and whanau, and local primary schools as well as the staff and students at Hornby High. Many of the businesses sold all of their products and measured their success with generous profits.

Mai Biz winners take up Students take the Next Steps to Leadership Te Wero Pakihi challenge Four Hornby High students were part of a group of 50 students from around the country who met in Auckland to participate in Te Wero Pakihi – The Business Challenge. The students were members of the winning Mai Biz team. Te Wero Pakihi is all about challenging and expanding the students’ horizons and inspiring them to be the leaders of tomorrow. While in Auckland they worked on a campaign for Air New Zealand and how they could improve areas of their business.
Sixty one Year 11 and 12 students have just returned from a threeday Next Steps Leadership Camp at Kaiapoi. The students took part in activities including rogaining, abseiling and workshops with a focus on leadership. This year’s prefects also talked about their experiences as school leaders. Sit the joint in your pot and set your oven to medium. Pour at least 3 cups of a “soft” red wine over the meat (merlot for example). Add a whole head of garlic, 2 bay leaves, 10 peppercorns, a small sprig of rosemary and the zest and juice of three oranges. The lamb doesn’t need to be covered but it needs to be well bathed. Top up with water or beef stock to mid level, season with salt and 2 tablespoons of raw sugar. Put the lid on and cook for at least one and a half hours, the meat should be fall-apart tender.

Directions Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. Line two baking trays. Combine the breadcrumbs with the salt, chillies, spring onion, coriander, lemon zest and oil. Slice the yams and toss with the honey, salt, cumin seeds and chilli avocado oil. Peel and slice the carrots - add to the yams and bake for 30 minutes. Place the chicken breasts on the tray, then season and cover with the crumbs, tightly packed. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove and let rest while covered with foil for 10 minutes.

What causes OOS? The Department of Labour states: “One of the favourable explanations for OOS is that it is caused by muscles being held tense or tight for too long.’’
These conditions may be caused by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, vibrations, mechanical compression, or sustained or awkward positions. The shorter and tenser the muscle, the harder it pulls on the places it attaches to (e.g. the bone). When this happens in the forearm the pull at those attachments and tendons causes irritation and inflammation of those areas. This will be noticed as pain in the elbow and wrist. When this happens in the neck and shoulder area, it will be noticed as local pain, stiffness and sometimes headaches. The nerves run right through the muscles. Tension on the muscles causes pressure on the nerves. As the muscles shorten, the nerves running through them have a tendency to both shorten and slide less well. Emma’s back! THAT’S right folks, Emma Palaamo has returned to the Richmond Club Bistro, and this time she is running it! Emma last worked at the Club when her parents Bev and Steve Palaamo were running the Bistro and Restaurant pre-EQ. Unsure of what she wanted to do when she left school Emma decided to attend university where she earned a degree in English and Psychology. “I’ve wondered if I’d ever use my degree, but I love being in the kitchen. Cooking’s in my blood. It’s what I’m used to,” said Emma. Largely trained by her father, Emma said she was nervous when she was initially offered running the Bistro. “My parents have such a good reputation and I don’t want to let Dad down.
